There is a clash in the world today, and it’s not between cultures but within them. Between those of us — everywhere — who want to coexist, and those everywhere who want to fear, hate, and otherize.
The real divide isn’t left vs right, or “Islamic” vs “secular” — it’s open vs closed.
They are fighting the future because the future has arrived, and they don’t like how colorful it is. They prefer black & white. And so they hold out and try to undo all that, as if our societies are a carpet they can just roll back, a slate they can wipe clean.
We are the future. Despite the catastrophic scene you see around you, we are the future. The future isn’t black & white, it’s colourful. The future isn’t homogeneous, it’s diverse.
Authoritarianism is rising, but perhaps when we look back at this, it’ll appear not their new renaissance but their last stand.
They want to make this our darkest hour. We have to make it our finest.
